The Left’s New Human Shield
If you would have told me a year ago that I would be dedicating time and energy to criticizing the political methodology of a 16 year old girl, I would have said you’re absolutely insane. But it’s 2019, and the American political Left is using a 16 year old girl as a political human shield for its project.
Greta Thunberg’s thing is climate change. She thinks the world is ending, that world leaders are not doing enough about it, and that telling them to do something about it will cause them to do something about it. As far as her personal opinions go, there is nothing really worth spending time on. She’s 16. She has opinions. Who cares?
But then the broader political Left comes into play, and they have taken a 16 year old girl and used her as a spokeswoman to say everything they could ever hope to say on the world stage. And the best part is nobody can argue with her because she’s a 16 year old girl with mental health issues.
It would take a real jerk to point out the emotive nonsense going on, but I’ve been called far worse than just a jerk. This is emotive nonsense.
Sure, the imagery of an innocent 16 year old girl scolding the most powerful people on the planet is something Disney TV movie specials are made of. But, back in reality, there are a lot of competing goods involving complicated science, economics, and international politics involved in the things Greta is oversimplifying. Shouting “how dare you?!” at the leaders of the world as they applaud her for giving them all manner of warm fuzzies does not even begin to address the complexity of the aforementioned issues.
Greta Thunberg is undoubtedly sincere, but the Left’s use of her is performative. The purely emotive use of her on the world stage is of little, if any, value.
